If someone wants to learn how to make a LIFESTYLE CHANGE, this is the first step in that process. Most "dieting" books I see are either short articles in magazines, monotonousness "clean eating" meal plans, or some other half-assed version of something that requires a much more in depth analysis. The fact of the matter is most advertised diets are not helpful at all, and do not help on an individual basis. In addition most DO provide extremely quick results, the whole 'lose 40 pounds in 1 month' with someone holding their old pair of jeans next to their transformed frame. The reality is that yes you LOST WEIGHT, but that is completely different than getting leaner, it is completely different than becoming healthier. Never should you lose weight that fast in such a short time unless you are very obese. The worst part about these diets are that once your off, you immediately rebound due to the damage you've done to your metabolism. So before I go off any longer on this topic, what if I told you there is a way to diet that isn't really a diet at all, rather a consistent, accurate, flexible method you can adhere to for the REST OF YOUR LIFE, and be able to change your body composition however you please?
Assuming you said yes, because I don't know anyone interested in fitness who wouldn't love to know how to do this, let me show you the book that started it all for me. The Nutrition Pyramid by Eric Helms is by far the best written book when it comes to initial knowledge on how to properly eat. The reason it's called the pyramid of nutrition is because he starts at the base (the most important) and works his way up. First time readers will be truly amazed at this prioritization. Most all people I know have NO CLUE what are the vital factors, in fact more often than not they have their priorities completely wrong. For example I have numerous folks come up and ask me how to 'make gains' and the first question they want to know is what supplements they should take. As this book and numerous studies have shown, even the 'best' supplementation only accounts for about 5% of your total 'gains' as they call it. What's the other 95--- You got it, eating right. That either 1) blows peoples minds or 2) they truly don't believe it and just want a quick answer. I'm not gonna give the book away but Helms separated nutrition into 5 levels, and guess what is the least important level?-- You guessed it again... Supplements. I can attest to this first hand, I used to think supplements got you huge, and I needed a 200$ stack every month in order to get massive, yes I made beginners progress, but it wasn't sustained and a hit walls in my hypertrophy and strength, along with a hole in my wallet. Once I stumbled upon Helm's lectures a few years back I was skeptical at first, but after applying it over the years my body went from a 'that kid lifts' to a professional natural bodybuilder. If that's not enough look the guy up, he has coached numerous men and women to professional levels and has the credentials to back it up.
The reason I recommend this product is because there are too many misconceptions in this industry and it bothers me seeing people with average genetics listen to a professional spew garbage to them from the supplement company they are sponsored by. I realize they are under contract and probably even believe the products work, but they are also getting paid to do so and most likely have a coach who takes care of their diet for them (not overgeneralizing but I've seen that case many times).
When someone asks me what's the best protein shake I say egg whites. They look at me funny and ask 'no like what kind of whey protein'. At this point I can already say they are missing the point, and I say do you not get enough protein with your diet. Once we hit this far in the conversation they seem so confused as to I am not recommending a whey protein product, because they truly don't understand it is perfectly manageable to get your protein requirement from eggs, steak, dairy, chicken, and fish. But isn't steak and dairy bad everyone says? What about the estrogen in milk they say? What about all that fat in the steak??? I thought you were supposed to only eat chicken and rice???? At this point there heads basically exploded (for the rare few who have even made it this far in the conversation).
What I can say is this book lays out in absolute detail what you need to know about eating for you goals. I can say this book will open your eyes to the keys to nutrition you probably had no clue about. The best part about it is it is over 100 pages of REFERENCED, SCIENCE BASED claims with sound reasoning behind each claim. Helms transparency is honestly refreshing, he even talks about the limitations and practical implications of the system of nutrition they have set up (something you VERY RARELY see in the fitness industry today). If you are looking to change your life for the better, in a consistent and methodical manner, with having knowledge of what's going in your body at all times, I urge you to check out this book.
Here is a link, Helms currently has two books available, the other one is just as helpful.
*** I bought the book myself, and I have no deal or affiliation with the authors, accept for the respect I have for the education they bring***
